My wife went through a phase of singing Walk Like an Egyptian and We Built this City on Rock and Roll.

    It was an interesting period!

    Sounds like a fantastic phase.

I didn't know you had arthritis – sorry to learn that. We're looking at getting a picnic bench to go out on our deck – every time the sun shines I want to be out there, but it's not so comfortable lying flat on some cushions! I also want to get a hammock!

What are you laying flags in your yard for?

Just flag stones, to enlarge my actual patio area. I was pulling them up from one area of the garden and moving them to another (when I say I was moving them, I mean my brother, because I can't lift anything or I risk being in bed for days).

Yeah, I've suspected about the arthritis for a couple of years, but the pain got so bad this winter that it forced me to go back on pain management meds and get it formally diagnosed. It was always a possibility, developing it early, since I had juvenile arthritis in my hands. But that's life, and you just try to deal with it and get on.

I'd like to, if I can remember. 😀 Maybe a bulletin or a Twitter alert or something just before the event? YES I HAVE A TERRIBLE MEMORY.

I just bought a lovely new table and chairs patio set, and I'm hoping to finish laying the flags in my yard (it's taken almost two weeks, bit every day, because I have arthritis in my spine and shoulder), and then I'm going to sit at my new set, hope it doesn't rain, and drink coffee and relax.

    Hi,

I'm Annelies from Belgium. (It's a tiny country in the middle of Europe, Belgian waffels anyone?)

I've been struggling with insomnia for quite a few years (around 12 years). Now I'm up to the point where I can't remember what it's like to get up and be rested.

I always get up tired. Either I just can't catch sleep or I wake up several times a night.

I've taken several kinds of drugs which then enable me to sleep. But since I worry about addiction, I don't take too much or when I feel things get better I quit taking them.

And then of course, the insomnia is lurking around the corner.

I'm used to always being tired, but I'm jealous of other people who seem to radiate energy. Mostly wondering what it feels like actually.

It most be wonderful to have an active life and not be tired all the time.

I'm also fed up with other people's advice. Like a hot shower or some kind of chinese herbal tea will help me sleep.

They just don't get it. So I've stopped mentioning it and just tell them I had a bad night.

My husband just tells me to get to bed earlier. He's a sweetheart but he sleeps before his head hits the pillow. He just doesn't understand. Quite frustrating.

I'm glad to finally get in touch with people who do get it.

Maybe I won't find a solution but I'm sure I will find some comfort and support here.

    Thanks in advance!

Hellooooo and Welcome! I'm Caers. I've suffered with chronic insomnia for most of my life (34 years).

I find the “advice” people give is the most irritating part. Like I haven't tried EVERYTHING yet, right? Like your very well known herbal remedy was completely unheard of by me until THIS VERY MOMENT. It's… a sore spot with me. I'm in the waking constantly all night category, for the most part, and most sleeping meds either keep me awake for days or leave me exhausted for days, so I can't take them. I don't know about comfort, but I can offer understanding. 🙂

Mostly I play a lot of games on Steam, or endlessly scroll through Tumblr, or do stuff in Photoshop. Sometimes I just lay in bed and listen to music.

I hear you, Matt. I had the same setup for a while. It's annoying when you use an external HD as a media center as you need to get yet another one as the backup. Soon you end up with hard drives everywhere!

As for music I'm listening to right now, my head keeps on looping Pure by the Lightning Seeds. I can't escape it – somebody help me!

They were here for a concert (town fete sort of thing, they were good enough to show up because they're from the general area) at the end of last year, and I took my kids to see them. They recognised a lot of the songs because I listen to them a lot, and it was an outdoor free concert, so it was amazing and fun, and a great first concert for them 😀 Now whenever they hear songs by them, they talk about going to the concert and sitting on the grass with me and seeing the LS.

Hulloooooo I am Caers, or also http://twitter.com/Sithiche . I live in England, and I'm often awake a lot at night here, but also during the day, until I generally beat my head against the wall and finally pass out. Or, you know, instigating a discussion with my kids about Pokemon works just as well. I'm allowed to say that. They say the same thing about the way I bang on about music and the Final Fantasy series. My twitter feed is, by default, locked. But go ahead and message me anyway if you feel like a hefty dose of half mad ramblings and good old English sarcasm and discussion about the weather and tea (although you know? I prefer coffee. I blame living in Seattle for so long for that).

I think we might need a 'Seen any bad movies lately' discussion topic. I have been inspired by 'Bad Lieutenant' and 'Mega Shark vs Giant Octopus'.

Mega Shark vs Giant Octopus is a classic. That had Debbie Gibson and Lorenzo Lamas in it. HDU

…I look at my children and can't tell them apart. (My son is an inch taller than me, and a good 8 inches taller than my daughter)

…I can't remember how to type (I was taught to touch type on a typewriter when I was 4, and I've been using computers for 25 years, so this is a big one).

    …I can't make coffee.

…I don't think to update my twitter about how I can't sleep.

    …I'm watching the sunrise.

I'm on Gtalk mostly (chaosnemain at gtalk), sometimes on MSN (candygothcoffeefreak at hotmail dot com) rarely on Yahoo (caersmane at yahoo dot com) and I log on to Skype (caersmane…I think. Or just Caers) only when I schedule a call with someone, but don't mind logging on to chat. I rarely do voice or video chat since it gives me hives.

I'm in the UK, and I have two kids (one with autism) so later at night, after 9 or 10ish GMT is good for me.

Mine is chronic insomnia, and I've had it since I was a baby. There was never any event that caused it. And it's well documented in my medical records, sleeping medications don't work, and I've rarely slept more than two to three hours at a stretch. *shrug* My current anxiety/panic meds make me sleep up to 15 hours a day though, but it isn't a restful sleep, and tbh I feel worse now than I did when I wasn't sleeping. Medicated sleep screws with my head.
