★ Admin'pbsndwch' wrote on '27:No, not right now. Do you think until I start that in a couple of weeks it would be a good or bad idea to take sleeping pills? I used to take ambien.
Well, I'm no doctor so I wouldn't like to say. Could you give the sleep clinic/sleep doctor a call and ask if it's OK to take sleeping pills before your appointment?

★ AdminWelcome aboard, Amy – certainly not a strange introduction; by definition we're all a little bit different here at Insomnia Land!!
Did your insomnia begin at the same time as your depression? Do you see any link between the two?

★ AdminWhat a great discussion and resource thread this is turning into. Thanks for getting it started, sleeplessinky!! As seems to be alluded to in this thread, I often come across insomniacs complaining that their sleep study wasn't particularly useful since it only investigated the possibility of sleep apnea; when it comes to insomnia the studies aren't usually all that helpful. I am hoping I'll be corrected by another member on this, though!

★ AdminThat's interesting – thanks for sharing, both of you. I am sure both the options suggested by wonderhussy and Birdlike will be of interest to those looking to explore medicinal options for their insomnia.

★ AdminWelcome to the gang, and thanks for introducing yourself! You're definitely amongst people who know what you're going through here at Insomnia Land. Where the medical profession gives in, we keep going!!
You mention you've had a sleep study done – what did you learn from that? Any other sleep issues such as sleep apnea?
I look forward to reading more of your posts and getting to know you better.

★ Admin'jita' wrote on '25:Hi…. I just introduced myself as a new insomniac. As a byproduct of my insomnia I also suffered from anxiety for about a month, which was in my opinion a side effect of an antibiotic I took at the time. I treated the anxiety with L-Theanine, which helped me tremendously. Maybe you tried it already, and if not, it's worth a try.
Thanks for sharing. L-Theanine has actually cropped up before as a potential insomnia remedy, but this is the first time I've heard about it being useful for anxiety:

★ AdminWelcome aboard, Bobby. The primary reason this community was built was to ensure insomnia sufferers didn't suffer alone. Those without insomnia can never truly know what the condition is like – we want to create a support group of insomniacs, improve awareness and education of the condition and have a little fun at the same time. Lofty ambitions, but that's just how we roll!
I am sure you'll find plenty of support and advice here. I look forward to reading more of your posts and getting to know you better.
Have you found any effective ways of improving the quality of your sleep?

★ AdminWelcome to Insomnia Land, Jita and thank you for taking the time to introduce yourself.
As for insomnia being a symptom of aging, in my research for the Insomnia Land blog I often come across information that suggests we sleep less as we get older, but at the same time we naturally need less sleep as we age. This doesn't really explain your sudden affliction, though.
The only other research I have come across regarding aging and insomnia has to do with yellowing of the eyes:
If your insomnia began when you took the antibiotics, perhaps they're to blame. As for atenolol, the only time I have seen this associated with insomnia was in a study that used those taking atenolol to look at the effects of melatonin (it appeared to improve sleep in those taking the drug):
http://www.insomnialand.com/blog/melatonin-may-relieve-insomnia-in-those-taking-beta-blockers/
If you are concerned that your doctor isn't being helpful, you should try to see another doctor. It may also be worth looking to see if there are any sleep specialists in your area. CBT may be worth investigating, too.

★ AdminI love the idea for a positivity thread – thanks for getting this one started, Caers!
I have recently started land sailing; it's an awesome 'sport' and now I find myself constantly looking at the wind forecasts so I can get back out there! I did actually break the front axle of my land sailer the other day in very strong winds, but I am being sent a free replacement (thankfully).
More info on land sailing for anyone interested: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Land_sailing
I look forward to reading more positive posts in this thread 😉

★ AdminHmmm… this almost sounds like restless leg syndrome, but not in the legs! I read an article recently that was the basis for an email sent to newsletter subscribers. In addition to talking about RLS, it also mentions a condition known as periodic limb movement disorder which, whilst not sounding exactly like the symptoms you describe, seems similar.
Here's the article anyway:
