Welcome to Insomnia Land, Marina. It's so good to see you introduce yourself here in the forums after registering back in June! It's also great to see you getting involved in the blog and sharing your experience and thoughts in the comments.

Franky also suffers with restless leg syndrome – I wonder if he can offer you any advice that's a little different to what's been said before. It might be worth sending him a message – he's a very friendly person.

Have you thought about fitting out a room in your home to sleep in where you'll feel comfortable away from your husband's snoring? I doubt the noise is conducive to sleep and being somewhere else isn't comfortable for you as you've mentioned. Maybe creating your own bedroom (even if you didn't use it all the time) would help?

Have you thought about visiting a registered sleep doctor or sleep clinic for more specialized advice than that ( apparently not) offered by your existing physician?

    Hi Jay

Firstly, welcome to Insomnia Land. It's great to have you as a member. Have you spoken with your doctor about your sleeping problems? I assume you've spoken with a medical professional at some point as you mention using sleeping pills. Have you raised your concerns about them with your doctor?

I am sure you'll find lots of support and advice here. Don't be hesitant to post new topics, or respond to existing ones – indeed, even off-topic conversations are appreciated here.

We're just a bunch of people looking for mutual support, advice sharing, and a little fun along the way.

    Enjoy your stay.

Not really a movie, but I just found that Netflix is showing a TV show serial of one of my favourite books of all time (Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett). Made in 2010, I hadn't even heard of it. My wife and I sat through 5 hour long episodes yesterday. We were hooked! 3 more to go, then I guess I have to hope they serialize the sequel (World Without End).

I just finished “organizing and rating” iTunes stuff. This basically means, I spend a few hours staring at the screen rating songs, and messing around with my playlists. Now I'm catching up on Insomnia Land and thinking of what I might watch later tonight…a movie…or maybe some TV shows…or both.

Have you tried the new Ping thing?

I can relate to you GoneWiththeSun. My parents knew about my insomnia, eventually and inherently. They would “send me to bed, must have lights out” even though they knew I couldn't fall asleep. It was a sticking point with them and myself for years, same thing goes with my mood disorder.

I wonder if this is similar to the good intentions of making your child finish every last scrap of food on their plate before letting them leave the table? Consequently people grew up either fearing food or gorging on it.

I think there really needs to be more guidance for parents when it comes to coping and helping children with unusual sleeping habits.

One of our members, Kik, also reviewed a sound based listening product:

Sure, give them a try if you think they might help – but don't spend more than you can afford, and don't go getting your credit card out thinking they'll be the insomnia cure you've been looking for.

Feel free to post in the insomnia forum with any questions or to field any views from other members about these or other similar sleep products.

PS – We've also covered Silenor on our blog:

It could be worth speaking with your doctor about.

I think a lot of the problem comes down to the fact that sleep apnea is relatively easy to treat. Most of the time, you're put on a CPAP machine and problem solved. Insomnia is far more complicated, and not as profitable. I've written about this problem a few times on the Insomnia Land blog.

Don't give up hope – we're all here to support you and each other.

    Hi Lyn

Welcome to Insomnia Land, and thank you for taking the time to introduce yourself and share your experience with insomnia. First, let me tell you that you aren't alone. We're only a small bunch of people right now, but we have many members who will relate with what you're going through – especially when it comes to dealing with people that think cutting back on caffeine or drinking a warm cup of milk will suddenly cure your insomnia.

I am sure some of our members will soon chime in on this thread and offer you a friendly welcome, some support and some advice. In the meantime, feel free to browse the insomnia section of the forums, and also post some new topics if you're after specific advice or want to share more of your relationship with insomnia. You might also want to browse our blog: http://www.insomnialand.com/blog

Have you tried looking for help from sleep specialists or sleep clinics? I am not sure how strong the market is over in Australia, but it could be worth looking into.

That's a really interesting thought, Franky – thanks for starting a thread on this topic.

I have always been a bit of a night owl – but when I get out of bed late in the day I sometimes regret 'missing out' on part of that day (especially as the nights are so much longer at this time of year). Having said that, I do also see how people could miss the night, too – I definitely appreciate it, but not so much at this time of the year!

Do you find you miss the nights more during the summer when the evening hours are that much shorter? At least at this time of the year there is a far longer opportunity to get your nighttime fix in!
