You could always make a change to your sleep window as you described for a couple of weeks and then reflect back after a couple of weeks to see if you found it helpful or not.

A bed massage sounds wonderful and I can’t think of any downside to such a thing!

If you wake and find it hard to fall back to sleep then either you got enough sleep (you aren’t sleepy enough for more sleep to occur) or you are putting effort into falling back to sleep/putting pressure on yourself to fall back to sleep. With sleep, the more we try the harder it becomes.

Why not implement the techniques while continuing with your medication? There’s no need to choose one or the other — no ultimatums here!

If you enjoy reading before bed, there’s no need to stop doing that — we just want to avoid forcing ourselves to stay in bed in an attempt to make sleep happen when being in bed doesn’t feel good.

    I hope this helps!

Are you sleepy enough for sleep (finding it hard to stay awake) when you go to bed at night? When it takes you a long time to fall asleep, what do you do? Do you stay in bed or do something else?

Going to bed later can help build sleep drive — in turn, that can make it easier to fall asleep and can lead to less time awake at night. You might find this video helpful: Is sleep restriction helpful if your main challenge is staying asleep rather than falling asleep?

It’s almost a guarantee that you’ll experience some sleep disruption in the short-term as you taper off the medication. What’s usually helpful is to create a plan and stick to it — no matter what. You might find this video helpful: Why you just can’t seem to get off the sleeping pills or supplements when you have insomnia.

You might also like my podcast episode with Sally — she was taking sleeping pills for 10 years but was able to stop taking them (and sleep well): How Sally improved her sleep after 60 years of insomnia and 10 years of sleeping pills.

Of course, it’s important not to make any changes to your medication without talking to your doctor first.

Since chronic insomnia exists because we are trying so hard to avoid nighttime wakefulness, when we try to make nighttime wakefulness happen we might find sleep a lot easier — just as you experienced! Thanks for sharing.

It sounds as though you are putting a lot of effort into trying to make sleep happen — I wonder if that could be part of the problem? Have you tried asking someone who sleeps well what they do to make sleep happen?

It’s normal to experience sleep disruption the night before something “big”. If you won the lottery jackpot and were due to pick up the winnings the next day I’m certain there wouldn’t be much sleep happening that night!

All that truly matters here is what you do on the day itself. Do you decide not to go to the lottery office to claim your jackpot win because you had a really difficult night? Or do you go regardless (even though it might feel more difficult to do so)?

Taking care of your child is a lot — I can’t think of a bigger (or more rewarding!) responsibility and activity! I get drained taking care of my kids and I sleep great! When you wake during the night, why do you think you find it hard to fall back to sleep?

Hormonal fluctuations can definitely influence sleep but that doesn’t mean they lead to a life of chronic insomnia! As the body adapts to hormonal changes, sleep will usually recover. If it doesn’t, that’s usually because of a change in our relationship with our thoughts about sleep and/or a change in our sleep-related behaviors.
