Franky, I've always thought that you've been through enough to cover a hundred lives already. Your experiences are nothing short of incredible, and I have a huge amount of respect for you. Thank you for sharing.

Ruth – when someone dies suddenly I think it makes it all the more difficult. The same happened with my step father last summer.

You should definitely upload some pics, Val!

Personally, I wouldn't tattoo myself but I can appreciate the art. My best friend has LOTS of tattoos, and some of them really are beautiful. When my mother got divorced from her second husband about 15 years ago she got herself a tattoo – she just wanted to have the one and has stuck with it.

I've heard they can be addictive, but she's held out so far!

What a well read group! Orwell is one of my favorites now (not so much in HS when I was forced to read him). 1984, Animal Farm and Down and Out in Paris and London are classics!

Thanks for sharing some book titles. I remember my mother having a huge compilation book of George Orwell. She wouldn't let me read it when I was younger as she said she didn't want to ruin Orwell for me by letting me read the books at too young an age (I was under 10). I've only read 1984 and Animal Farm. Unfortunately, Animal Farm was kind of ruined for me as we had to study it at school – the easiest way to ruin a book, in my opinion.

Gormenghast – Mervyn Peake Insane fantasy about a crumbling castle civilisation. Fantasy with lots of savy and no bloody dwarfs or elves or busty maidens. Brilliant.

I might give this one a try – I struggle to get into fantasy books, but after reading Pillars of the Earth (not fantasy, but set in the middle ages) I want to give them a try.

I just read a great one called I Know This Much is True by Wally Lamb. omg, awesome! And just got halfway through Shutter Island; so far it's magnificent. I can't seem to put it down.

That first book looks pretty intense. I'm encouraged that you're enjoying the book version of Shutter Island so far – because the trailers I have seen for the movie don't really inspire me to want to watch it.

Valentine's Day (like New Year's Eve) is a non-holiday to me. If you love someone, you should live every day like it's Valentine's Day. My honey and I are going to have dinner at a great authentic Italian restaurant that reminds us of our recent trip to Positano/Capri – Trattoria Toscana in the Village.

My funniest Valentine's Day memories are from my single days. My other single friends and I would throw an “Angry Women's Party” – basically a 3 hour all you can drink event for women only. We would put up paper on the walls where we could dedicate declarations of “not love” to the guys who wronged us (i.e. To John – for making me sleep in the wet spot). Very cathartic and funny – then we would open up the event to guys, who would get a kick out of all the dedications, not to mention all my drunk girlfriends.

I love it when couples do something for Valentine's day that has a personal meaning to them. When did you go to Italy? I spent a couple of weeks there in 2004; visited Rome, Florence, Pisa and Cinque Terre.

As for the Angry Women's Party – sounds like you should run franchises! What a brilliant idea!!

My boyfriend and I will be facing the consumerist nightmare that is Valentines day with our usual sense of scepticism and irony. A contest to find the most vomit inducing cards and stupid gifts will suffice. Who needs a day to acknowledge the awesomeness of your other half?!

Sometimes a sense of humour is all that can get you through!! I like to get the most awful cards for my family at Christmas time – sometimes I think it's more fun for me than for them!!

Yup, it's one of the reasons why I got the Sony. I don't pine for a Kindle – you can't buy books from elsewhere without converting them first, the files are full of digital rights management code and I don't like the fact Amazon can remove books from the Kindle at will, and monitor your reading habits.

I just want to read – the Sony does the job perfectly 🙂

Don't be afraid to post in other areas of the forum, Valerie!

Just got this one via email:

A San Francisco cabbie picks up a nun. She gets into the cab, and the cab driver won't stop staring at her. She asks him why is he staring and he replies, “I have a question to ask you but I don't want to offend you.”

She answers, “My dear son, you cannot offend me. When you're as old as I am and have been a nun as long as I have, you get a chance to see and hear just about everything.

I'm sure that there's nothing you could say or ask that I would find offensive.”

“Well, I've always had a fantasy to have nun kiss me.”

She responds, “Well, let's see what we can do about that; #1, you have to be single and #2, you must be Catholic.”

The cab driver is very excited and says, “Yes, I am single and I'm Catholic too!” “OK” the nun says, “Pull into the next alley.” He does and the nun fulfills his fantasy with a kiss that would make a hooker blush.

But when they get back on the road, the cab driver starts crying. “My dear child,” said the nun, “why are you crying?”

Forgive me sister, but I have sinned. I lied; I must confess that I'm married and I'm Jewish.” The nun says, “That's OK, my name is Kevin and I'm on my way to a Halloween party.”

Welcome to the gang, Valerie. You're not far from me – I'm just over the river in Brooklyn.

I have the pocket Sony Reader and absolutely love it (and I know one other member here who now has one, too)! I find I'm reading a lot more since I got it. When you get a spare moment, feel free to join in the conversation going on about recommended books over in the general conversation forum – we'd love to hear some recommendations from you.

Have you read our blog? We try to provide good information, but with a sense of humor – insomnia is depressing enough without our blog matching the theme. Who knows, it may offer you some relief, or at least some entertainment!

Facebook is great for networking with existing friends, but I think it's difficult to find new people who share a common interest and are open to welcoming new people into their group – that's why we have our own home right here. We can also share our personalities without fear of falling foul of the myriad of rules and regulations over at Facebook.

Anyway, I've rambled long enough – I look forward to getting to know you better and reading more of your contributions in the future.

I have issues with concentration so reading books is something I miss a lot, I used to read books all the time, but gave up when I tried reading a book and somehow achieved reading the same page 12 times!

I used to read a lot of horror, and the best books I read in that genre was the Rats, Lair and Domain by James Herbert.

When I was a kid I could never finish a book. The first book I ever managed to get through was one of Roald Dahl's – I guess he got me into reading. Quite an amazing legacy when you think about it – he got thousands of kids reading.

Anyway, I digress – I'm a lover of horror too and I think I've read the book you just mentioned. Have you ever read any of Graham Masterton's books? I think he is one of the most underrated horror writers of all time.

    Ok, warning…grouch message…

I hate St. Valentines day, always have. I do not think you need to have a day where you celebrate your love for someone…or have a day for a stalker to justify creeping you out with cards and various other tat…and that's before I get started on the extortionate prices that stores deem justified for flowers, candy, bits of string naughty underwear and so on.

Don't get me wrong, I'd like to think I'm a romantic person…I have written my Cuddle Bunny poetry, made her champagne breakfast in bed on her birthday and so on but at the same time, I think you should be able to do this any time.

    Sorry, rant over.

A lot of people would agree with you – myself included. It's just a commercial day to encourage consumerism. Real love is every day, not one day!
