When you are able to sleep, you attribute that success to the Ambien (rather than your own ability to sleep) and when you don’t, you feel that it’s because the Ambien “didn’t work”. If the Ambien worked, it would help you sleep every night.
The fact of the matter is, sleeping pills do not generate sleep. They can help us relax and this can then make it easier to fall asleep — but it is always our own bodies that generate sleep. Nothing can generate sleep other than our own sleep drive.
So, let’s see if we can figure out how to get your sleep back on track. Can you tell us when you normally go to bed at night, when you get out of bed to start your day in the morning, and how many hours of sleep you get on an average night?

★ AdminGoing to bed before sufficiently sleepy for sleep is very common among people with chronic insomnia — as is spending too much time in bed. It’s a major step forward to recognize this, and I am not surprised that you have noticed improvements in your sleep since you started spending less time in bed and going to bed only when you feel sleepy enough for sleep.
Moving forward, try to make sure you always get out of bed by the same time every day to give your body a strong morning anchor — and consider getting out of bed when you can’t sleep.

You mention that you don’t think stress is an issue for you — would you say the same for a racing mind? As pointed out in the articles you mentioned (which, it should be highlighted, are more than ten years old), low levels of GABA were associated with sleep disruption due to a racing mind or hyperarousal.
Although this is an interesting area of research, there is far more evidence to support the use of CBT as a way of tackling hyperarousal associated with insomnia.
