★ AdminThanks for getting back to me. If your current average nightly sleep duration is four-and-a-half hours, you will likely find it helpful to have a sleep window that is less than six hours — around five-and-a-half hours would likely be more appropriate (and helpful).
Feeling sleepy before the sleep window and then feeling awake as your sleep window arrives is a classic symptom of conditioned arousal: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mxx5aET1CgA
Are you also getting out of bed during the night if/when you are unable to sleep?

★ AdminWelcome to the forum, Linda. Can you give us a few more details about your sleep? When do you normally go to bed at night, when do you get out of bed to start your day, and how many hours of sleep are you getting on a typical night?

★ AdminI truly believe the success rate is much higher than 80% — but I guess it all depends on how you define “success”. Are we measuring sleep duration, sleep confidence, or something else?
Also, how is CBT-I being defined? Are we looking at specific components or a combination of components? Perhaps more importantly, how long is someone implementing CBT-I techniques (and how consistently are they implementing them) before we determine success or failure?

★ AdminHello Chris. The diagnostic criteria for restless legs syndrome (RLS) include:
- An urge to move the legs, accompanied by uncomfortable sensations
- The urge becomes worse when you are inactive
- Moving relieves the urge temporarily
- Symptoms are worse in the evening and night
If you had RLS at the time of your overnight sleep study this should have been picked up then (I’m assuming you underwent polysomnography?).
Are you taking medications? Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) can cause or worsen RLS.
If you think you may have RLS, it’s best to seek medical advice.
I hope this helps!

★ AdminI am not sure how many Spanish speakers we have in the forum — I am certainly not one of them! If you are able to post in English, we may be able to support you better (and you’d likely get more of a response)!

★ AdminYou know, I think you can use this as a learning experience — sleep efforts are not helpful!
You mentioned that you took alcohol because you had more caffeine than usual, hadn’t exercised during the day, and you felt that the Lunesta wasn’t kicking in. So, you drank alcohol in an effort to make sleep happen.
We cannot make sleep happen because sleep is a natural process. Drinking alcohol (or taking a sleeping pill) can help you relax and lead to sleep — but, even then, it is your body that is generating the sleep. Nothing can generate sleep for you. Your body generates sleep by itself.
Sleep happens when we abandon all sleep-related efforts.
Recognizing that your use of alcohol was an effort to make sleep happen — and that we can’t make sleep happen because we can’t control sleep — might help in the future if you are tempted to do something to make sleep happen.
I hope this helps!

★ AdminWelcome to the forum, James. I am sorry to hear about your struggles with falling asleep. Many people with chronic insomnia spend a lot of time thinking about sleep, being preoccupied with sleep, obsessing about sleep, and even catastrophizing about sleep. So, you aren’t alone and there is certainly nothing unusual in what you are experiencing.
First, let me reassure you that you can sleep, that there is no evidence that chronic insomnia causes any health problem, and that the body does a good job at compensating for lost sleep by itself.
Are you currently being treated for your anxiety? Have you looked into cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I)?

★ AdminWelcome to the forum and I’m sorry to hear about your struggle with sleep. Since this began relatively recently, are you able to remember what triggered the sleep disruption? This would be a clue to help you get your sleep back on track.
